it may be an odd thing to fixate on, but what fascinates me the most about professional drummers is that you could line 100 of them up and their drums setup would all look different. It's amazing how much freedom the instruments have in that aspect, whereas almost every other instrument on the planet is designed to be held and played a certain way. it's incredible to me.

  • Muelesa Riocontra

The cymbals placement is unusual but also genius. Not on the front, but in the behind instead. This way, when you need to perform the snare beat and the crash beat in a fast sequence, you don’t have to lift the stick, hit the snare, lift again and hit the crash. You can simply do the same thing in one action and be twice as accurate! Also, those cymbals are perfectly placed behind the arms so they always get hit at the same speed and angle, making the sound totally consistent throughout the song. There’s a reason Jonathan Moffett is called the “drum machine” of drummers :D

you know when bruce lee did cha cha and timing was his thing, this was the reason... you train your self so that when a noise, a beat or a bell rang you punched or kicked or then chambered ready for the next.... i did this, it will make you understand the natural beat and rhythm in everything.... law of motion, every movement there is an opportunity.... striking when the sound reaches your ears will teach you anticipation, this is why he looks so badass, everytime he has hit an instrument, he has returned to his starting pose ready for the next, its like he is hitting invisible opponents.... and bruce lee took this to the next level in the game of death the real game of death where he fights dan inosanto with just a stick and declares "broken rhythm" jazzzzzzz hitting between the empty spaces..... i trained my high round houses to the temple area... and im no mma guy.... just regular old school martial arts with a wise old uncle and if you mimicked bruce where he flicked his punches and you sort of half chambered or hid your intentions then you could punch really fast or appear to punch really fast and it was a blast of a workout to high beat music.... killer hands and feet like a lethal whip.... if you understood that everyone walks and moves in a univeral regular way, the timing is more or less the same for everyone.... you can also bait people into following your beat and vice versa..... the screams that bruce did theres an obvious reason and then theres a hidden reason... its all about feints and timing.... if you can train yourself to move, flow or dance between beats... you'll be a master... fighting is like a cha cha dance with a partner they move forward you move backward and vice versa and once you can interpret the dance you can dance with anyone to any kind of "music" I didnt realise i was gonna drop a nugget of something here.... but watching this guy in his element is like watching a master doing his thing

    The basic beat: months
The extra hi-hats and kicks: years
    The tempo and tightness: decades
_that double cymbal fade/choke_ : not in a million years

1:25 The 16th note behind the back double cymbal choke is so clean it's hard for me to believe that he just pulled that off while stayin 100% on time. Unreal.

@Joseph Maique Well, IMHO the reason is for making him more "relaxed" in playing for this show. He's one of the best drummers in the world, he would not need a base but, I guess that for this video the main purpose was just showcasing then other. So, a little help from backtrack is not a scandal.
But then, other story is believing to ghosts

we're obviously hearing the original drums, maybe he pedaled the high hat in the original?

I've always admired drummers, because when I try to play the drums, my hands and feet just don't want to work the way I need them too. Keep up the great work!

after watching a couple of these sugarfoot videos, i came to the realization that MJ's music is really much more of rock than it is pop.

I was 8 when this song came out and I can remember how huge it was. You really don’t see anything like it now because there are so many different outlets for musicians. But mid 80s, Michael Jackson was basically Elvis or The Beatles. All us kids wanted to moonwalk…we couldn’t

The signs of good musicians is "You don't overplay" despite having skills . You keep the music to the song yet maintaining the Dynamics .

Goodness gracious, what a drummer! I consider this to be a prime example of what musicians refer to as "in the pocket." Absolutely EXHILARATING!!
