@Richter12x2's Projects I feel like a lot of people struggle to understand that the work of this man is not complex because it's like, a difficult piece, but because it complements the song exactly how it should, the beats are not specially hard, but they are played in a way that each little rudiment plays a role with each sample, each MJ "uGH, AH, UHHH", it's very precise"
and of course it's in what you don't play, he's a great machine drummer, very professional, most drummers obsessed with playing metal or progressive stuff won't get it (I say it by experience being a prog metal fan)

@General Tso I've always loved the drums and have never taken any lessons, purely self taught by ear and only a handful of runs on actual kits.
With that said. The time it takes him to spin the stick and hit the next note is in time. You can also do this by "hanging" your arm after a hit. There's multiple ways to do this really, but it always comes down to personal preference and feel. It's best to start out practicing this with very over dramatic movements and slow beats, to really hang in the middle of the notes and get a feel for it.
simply put, do weird shit with your arms in between notes to kill the dwell time until the next note. I'm talking full octopus. After enough practice with basic movements, you can go into stick spins, which is just a more advanced version of "octopus-ing", because again. The whole point is to kill the dwell time between notes by keeping time on the off hand.
      Hope that helps. 🤙🏼🤙🏼

    • Matthew Lawton
Matthew Lawton Hace 2 meses +3

He actually did hit a kick about 200ms early there in the beginning of the song. Which for most of us would pass as ultra-hardcore "perfect". It probably disappointed him lol.
Another commenter above noted that he thought Jackson had used a drum machine for the song because of how precise the master recording is. And that definitely tracks. One of the reason songs that use drum machines sound "fake' is because, even if you're not a musician and counting the miliseconds between beats, your brain, somewhere in the reptilian brainstem...it just needs those minor imperfections to be there. It recognizes the drum machine's precision as something foreign. This isn't usually a problem for human musicians because few are even remotely close to that precise. THIS guy, however, probably is at least 1/4 cyborg on his mother's side.

This is one of those skills I'm so afraid will eventually be lost. Used to be to run this stuff live you'd need a machine like Sugarfoot to run the rhythm section. Now, of course, you can run sequences or quantised beats that rule out the need for precision from a live drummer. But this shit up here is what you want from a touring drummer, no ifs, no buts. You can tell he lays this out for every session, a true professional.

    • Celia
      Celia Hace 21 un día

I don’t think this kind of skill will ever die out. You could have said the same thing back in the late 70s / early 80s when electronic music became the thing, but it’s 40 years on and we are still wowed by the skills of a musician such as this. There are plenty of drummers out there who strive for this kind of perfection so I can’t see that this skill will ever become a thing of the past.

@με λενενε I'm 32. I don't see why that matters. The point is many streaming drummers are more about theatrics than they are about basic drumming fundamentals. It's undeniable. Go to any well-known ESclips or Twitch channel for drums, it's all the same. Fancy camera angles, fancy lights, expensive lenses and lots of stick tricks/drum fills. How old are you to not acknowledge this is the modern state of drumming?

This is the problem many modern drummers have, feeling as though they need to add in double kicks and irrelevant fills. This video right here is a drumming masterclass, proof that playing "in the pocket" takes more skill than double kicks at 180 bpm. Honestly, I think ESclips and Twitch are mostly responsible for these showy drummers who feel the need to flair everything up. There is something beautiful in simplicity, precise hits and only playing what is needed. This is how drumming used to be. The thing that has me in awe is that this song has basically no fills, it's a basic drum beat and yet, Jonathan plays it with such class and precision, it seems unlike anything else you'll see today.

@Chris Dubay Try to play this song on a concert and let's see if you have the stamina and concentration to do this for hours in front of the roaring 125 000 people and the pressure for perfection from Michael Jackson. Keep in mind that the drummer is the Spine of the song and is the most important musician at live performance. The drummer dictates the whole song from beginning to the end. You need to learn more about drums if you want to do something you music otherwise you are wasting your time. And it's year 2022, if you have a camera to put such a Photo on your account, then you can record yourself playing drums. Show us what you can do, my man! Teach us how to compare Apple and Orange!

@Chris Dubay Personally, I find busier grooves easier to play in terms of time keeping. Maybe it's just me.

    • Man of Culture
Man of Culture Hace 9 meses

@Twistie Man I don't know why, but I find more complex groves easier to be in time with.
There's something about these straight groves that makes it very easy to speed up.
Not saying it's difficult, but when the groove is busier, I find it much easier to keep in time.

@Charl Brassell it is hard. To play the drums with such precision when it comes to timing and dynamics would be incredibly difficult. It's virtually flawless. It never seems like he plays any part a bit too loud or a bit too soft even in the slightest and the the same can be said for it timing accuracy. Yeah lots of people could learn the drum parts but it would be hard to find many people who can play like he did. It's incredible to watch even the the drum parts weren't that difficult.

The best part of this interview/drum performance is when he talks about the most important thing for a musician. And that is.....practice. Lots and lots and lots of "time with your instrument." He talked about how sometimes his leg was burning because he had been playing the bass drum so fast and hard. It's nice to know that it's not magical - it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and practice.

When I first saw this video without knowing who J. Moffett was, he looked a little tense in his facial expressions and the way he was holding the drum sticks didn't seem to be promising to me. But I can't help watching this video over and over again. He is on top of this unusual drum composition and makes it extremely enjoyable. This guy taught me a whole new set of drum languages and the beaty of no exaggeration.
