@dio52 it’s surprising because it’s played at every sporting event and is played in the media quite a bit. Everyone knows this song, especially someone who plays music for a living and is an avid listener. He’s obviously heard this before, it’s blasphemous to believe otherwise

Actually the drum playing in the Enter sandman is fairly simple. It's just basic 8-bit drumming. I think it's true that it's the first listening to Larnell and he's also talented drummer.

Larnell Lewis did a great job here, but Lars is one of the worst Metal drummers in history. Not really hard to equal or surpass him. This is the kind of metal song you learn on drums when you're just starting out.

    • Dylan Edwards
      Dylan Edwards Hace 5 días

@nahog99 Which is def impressive, but I doubt any of those guys were hearing the songs for the first time ever. I'm not a drummer, so I could be wrong, but I doubt Enter Sandman is particularly tough. Larnell has done this same thing with much harder songs, which is why IMO his skills are especially impressive.

Definetly a musical genius, he makes quite a few mistakes. Many parts are not like the original. I found it to be more entertaining to watch than a cover because then he has his own touch on it.

In the description to this song the Drumeo states Larnell has "a strong memory". Remembering the 7 item grocery list you just watched blow down the street and going into the store and buying each of those items is strong memory. Recalling almost every strike on a drum set shortly after a first listening of a song of musical style not familiar and doing it like he does it...this is next level memory.

    • Nicholus Yee
      Nicholus Yee Hace un día

this isn't memory at all. enter sandman, musically, is incredibly basic. there's no time changes, no tempo changes, it's 4/4, 100 BPM front to back. he only has to be aware of tone changes and section transitions. these are all telegraphed in certain ways in pop music. even if they aren't, you just have to count the bars, which is usually in multiples of 4. frankly, he could probably do a decent job of this without having heard it first.

    • boroh
      boroh Hace 4 días

he's sensational, but rock music has so many patterns and tropes so it's not as outlandish as you think.

First of all I never imagined 30 years after the release of the black album - there are musicians that never encountered it before. Second of all - Im really glad that he didnt nailed it 100% of the original. He surely brought his own flair into this and it sounds awesome - those bass drum gallops - pure gold! Keep rocking my dudes!

Stream of Consciousness Hace un mes +1

There are a lot bigger albums than the Black Album that you have probably never heard a song off of.
He's busy making Music and any Music he does listen to in public places would be in his genera or super pop hits that no one can get away from and Oldies in Drug Stores and Malls. More chance that he heard "The Unforgiven" or "Nothing else Matters", even "One" got a little air play and lulls you in and that Video was played a lot.
I.E. Geddy Lee was asked something about Van Halen in 200X, "I don't know I don't sit around listening to Van Halen all day".

@Frank "Angry Donkey" Trevis I feel like this is more accurate yes. I play the 6 & 12-string (or rather I did for many years). I’m not a professional musician by any means. When I heard & saw the video of Lyndsey Buckingham doing his live solo of Big Love, I lost my effin mind (I still rewatch it occasionally). I loved the cake as a Fleetwood Mac fan. As a guitarist-however amateur-I’m also really appreciating the eggs, the flour, and the sugar.

This video is INSANE! I KNEW he'd be upset about missing that shot, but he really needs to understand how amazing that set was! Take TWO?!!! UNBELIEVABLE! I am a huge Metallica fan and I think Lars needs to be worried! Especially appreciate Larnell's words at the end. Excellent advice and spirit! Metallica, VIRTUAL CONCERT PLEASE!!!

Watching you analyze this song after hearing it only once is wonderfully impressive. Wow. Your mind works is an amazing way.
I’ve been listening to this song for over 30 years and you are very good at this after only one listen. This is my first time coming across your channel and I am going to subscribe.
    Incredible.

Fascinating to hear Sandman broken down by a musician while in the ‘listening’ phase....I’ve been ‘listening’ for 50 years, and I’m still just in the ‘that’s cool’ level of critical analysis.

Try repeat listens but just focusing on one layer; like listen through the track just concentrating on high hats or basslines. Good learning experience.

Larnell makes me want to live in a world where I would never have heard this song, too. Sadly, once the music started, it was instantly familiar. However, to my credit, I would not have been able to name it.

Strange to hear a Metallica sound with steady rhythm or no slowing down / speeding up like when Lars "plays". This version is great. Amazing how a really strong drummer can change the whole song and improve the listening experience. Larnell is impressive indeed.

I have no experience playing drums, so from where I'm sitting that was absolutely AMAZING! To listen to a song and play it that accurately is so bad ass. Yes, Metallica would be lucky to have you on percussion with the band. If you want a fun challenge -- or what I think would be anyway -- check out Neil Pert from the band Rush. One of the greatest drummers of all time. He's famous for the number of rhythms he can hold at the same time -- polyrhythmic? Similar genre but more rock than metal.

Super excellent work Larnell Lewis! You, LeRoy Vega and Danny Carry are my favorite drummers of all time and quite honestly, I think are the 3 most under rated drummers in the world. Yes, Danny gets mad praises from his work in Tool but he's on a different level. Leroy Vega plays in the pocket, never misses a beat, super clean and super creative who also enjoys all types of music just like you. Again, well done!!!!! excellent work!!!!!!!!

I'm not a drummer. I'm not even a musician at all, but that was amazing! It blows my mind that you can listen to the song one time and then do so well at playing it! I'm sending this link to an old boss of mine who is a drummer. I can't wait to hear what he thinks about it.

That was truly fun to watch! I have to admit that the first time I saw Living Colour playing "Cult of Personality" on MTV, I was blown away by their incredible talent and that they didn't look like any other heavy metal bands. I was fortunate to have seen them live around '91. So, while decidedly surprising back in the early 80's MTV, I wasn't surprised but I have to say that you are incredibly talented. It's a real pleasure watching those who can, do.

Ask her about anything Classical though and she’s right there. Hard to believe but true. Also true is that her Father owned a record shop. But all this takes place in country South Australia which for new things might as well be the Mongolian Plateau or the Moon, but with the temperatures whacked right up.

What do you mean someone like you? I hope that wasn't an assumption about race because Metal has had massive crossover with the Rap scene and their are plenty of POC who play or are into metal, Living Color was a great band or more currently Animals for Leaders. Like all genres I'm sure people like to play the race card but that's what made the Beastie Boys so important in challenging racial assumptions, music is the food of life, its there for us all!!
