Thanks so much for this video I really appreciate all the hard work you guys put in to this community. You really help grow many drummers and continue to inspire many more. You guys are dedicated to this and your hard work doesn't go unnoticed or tl waste either. Stay awesome guys, thank you.

yes, gospel has many different styles infused into it today. I must be getting old, I remember when drums in church was too "secular" and many churches didn't allow them. now 7 +piece kits, mic up yes..progress

    • Shaggy Rodgers
Shaggy Rodgers Hace 2 años +2

why is an instrument considered "secular" or "satanic" whenever it is a more recently created instrument? distorted guitar, and electric bass are considered "secular" to a lot of churches, which is honestly stupid. Its music to worship God! I listen to Christian metal bands, are they secular? no!

The last 2 grooves he did are more contemporary. I'm old school. In my era of church while growing up we didn't use Calypso or Rock oriented beats! Everything else here is pretty traditional. I'm glad he started with the old school blues shuffle. Both blues & country has it roots in gospel/negro spirituals!

I once semi-blew a live gig (in church) when a 3/4 beat was thrown at me 15 seconds before we kicked off the song. Just like Jared was talking about, I had rarely if ever done that beat before, being primarily a rock drummer. We got through the song hopefully without the audience knowing. It was embarrassing because the other musicians knew I had blown that beat for one measure, but one is too many. If I could start all over I would learn music and the drums the right way.

These are great and good to know beats, and it's great to have that 2-beat 'shout' chorus in your back pocket, in case people start jumpin' pews like in the Blues Brothers movie, but I theenk I woulda included the 6/8 swing ballad feel that I play about 75% of the time, when I'm in church. I find that when soul singers get ready to REALLY emote, they go for that 6/8 feel. I've heard older musicians refer to it as "Cut 12" or 'double waltz" time, whether swung or shuffled.

As a novice black drummer from a pretty religious family and a very spiritual and musical black church, I just wanna spread some wisdom shared with me by the serveral drummers we have at the church. (We have two drummers at the church, in case one is absent and two drummers for each of our adult choirs.)
For gospel drumming you want to start quiet. The beginning of the song should be on cross-stick and should transition to quiet hits on the snare before the first chorus, and around the last chorus (and if your church is as enthusiastic as mine is, there probably will be a repeat of the chorus/encore) you wanna switch to ride. I say this because a lot of my church member are members of the older crowd and they would prefer if things got gradually and appropriately loud. Knowledge of Jazz, Swing, Funk, Boogie-Woogie, Rock n Roll and Caribbean drumming is pretty important due to the variation amongst Gospel and Spiritual music. (We have an international day at my church annually, so the instrumentatation must be able to preform ethnically diverse genres) CCM tends to be more similar to Rock, Country, Pop and Folk, so listening to these genres is pretty important. Playing Gospel is like playing in a band or group in that you must pay attention to the rest of the musicians and the singers as well as the situation you're playing in. However, this is Gospel. In the Gospel Genre, the religious message is much more important than the music at times.
Also, I didn't know that there was a perception that Gospel drumming was about having amazing chops, I always thought that it was about sounding good and appropriate. My church's drummer's only demonstrate their chops during fills and during the end of the song's "fermata" of sorts.
I hope this was informative, feel free to correct me on anything I said wrong, mispoke on or didn't say.

@AYOLOVE PHAT you shouldnt demonize african culture. And when i said african voodoo i meant say their is a different type from caribbean voodoo and african american voodoo, mainly talking about those of african descent that practice it from their ancestors from slavery in the diaspora...i wasnt trying to insult Africans.

      AYOLOVE PHAT Hace 11 meses

@King ElementHow dare you?! African voodoo?! Reeeaally?! Oh, is there a European, American, Asian, Oceanian, Polynesian, Australasian, or Caribbean voodoo? Or is satanism an "American" thing?! This is really vexing! Oh and yes, I'm a Nigerian and therefore an African and your comment is an insult to us!

The fact that you called it "African Voodoo" just makes me sad 😥. It seems that although you are tyring to be good and worship in the way you know how you still discriminate.
It's not "African Voodoo" its just "Voodoo", just like its not "your God", its just "God".
One day maybe we can all think of each other as people, not black or white or brown just "PEOPLE".

Drumeo: Really great videos and studies. However, please consider again the drum sound given the educational purpose. The equalization, compression and other dynamic alterations may work for song recordings, but here we need a more straight-thru and acoustic sound to hear whats going on i.e. the hihat/ghost note patterns are almost unhearable (also, not that it does anything, but the kick is just very bombastic +db on 100 hz range and around 8khz) Thanks
